Oxford is one of the most remarkable cities in Europe, being totally built around its ancient university.
For 700 years, it has not been really possible to see where the city ends and the university begins.
The major part of the small centre is taken up by the medieval and renaissance buildings - an unparalleled cluster of architecture, and all within an area of 600yds by 600yds.
At its heart is the Radcliffe Camera - set in one of the most beautiful squares in the western world.

The beauty of Oxford lies not only in its buildings but also in their grouping.
The view across Christ Church meadows to the line of colleges which forms the southern edge of the city is an urban prospect of rare power.
The High Street justifies its reputation as one of the finest streets in the world, as does the wide expanse of Broad Street - flanked by the Bodleian Library and Sheldonian Theatre on one side, and Trinity College on the other. The college buildings are often viewed across and through centuries-old gardens.
City of Dreaming Spires may be a cliche, but there is truth in it.
